About this coin:
This coin is dedicated to the biggest fortress in Germany: The Bundesfestung in Ulm which was completed 150 years ago. On the frontside you can see the famous Blaubeurer Tor in 3D and under that a banner with the inscription "Bundesfestung Ulm". The backside shows the most important parts of the fortress. Starting from the Wilhelmsburg up to the Forts.
The Bundesfestung was built as a central Waffenplatz(gathering point for troops) in South Germany between 1842 and 1859. With a polygonal embankment of about 9km it is the largest fortification of the 19th century! The experiences of the Napeolonic wars caused the german states to secure their westborders with the 5 Bundesfestungen Luxemburg, Mainz, Landau, Rastatt and Ulm starting from 1815 (Source: www.diebundesfestung.de)
