On this date by order of US President Bill Clinton, the artificial degradation (Selective Availability) of the GPS signal has been switched off. For the first time everyone could use this signal for its own and other purposes. The first and foremost requirement for Geocaching was thus created.

5 Geocent - Mai 3rd 2000
The birth of geocaching "on May 3rd 2000 Dave Ulmer hid a black plastic bucket in which he placed CDs, videotape, bank notes, a book, a slingshot and a can of beans at the position N45° 17 '28", W122° 24'48'' (near the city of Portland in the US state of Oregon). Then he published the coordinates of the stash in the newsgroup. [3] Within a few days after the publication of the first stash it was found by Mike Teague."

10 Geocent - October 2000
On September 2nd, 2000, Jeremy Irish informed in this newsgroup that he had created a website to the list of caches at the address geocaching.com. The previous records were taken over from the old site, because Mike Teague couldn't do this because of a lack of time. "Source:

25 Geocent - September 30th 2001
The Groundspeak team has grown in the meantime. One member of is Jon, also known as Moun10Bike, who had the idea to bring a coin with a tracking code into the game. So he placed the very first geocoin in a cache on September 30th 2001 and therefore made history as the inventor of a Geocoins :-) Jon approved to show a replica of the very first geocoin on the 25 Geocent coin.
